Xiao Zhang was offered a postdoctoral position at the University of Oxford

From:                                                  Date: 2019-03-20

Xiao Zhang, a student of Motion Structure Laboratory (MSL) was offered a postdoctoral position at the University of Oxford. He will carry out the research at the University of Oxford from the end of April 2019.

Xiao Zhang has studied on the relationship between mobile assemblies of spatial linkages and rigid origami in Motion Structure Laboratory since September 2015. He was awarded the doctor's degree of Tianjin University in January 2019. In his doctoral research, he proposed a transition technique from rigid origami patterns to mobile assemblies of spatial linkages based on the theoretical model of thick-panel origami and found several novel mobile assemblies from typical rigid origami. Besides, he investigated the compatible conditions of mobile assemblies and designed new thick-panel origami with flat-surface unfolded profiles. Furthermore, he developed a vertex-splitting technique to reduce the number of DOF in the rigid origami pattern. The technique was applied to a multi-DOF rigid origami pattern and several one-DOF basic assemblies were constructed. With the achievements, he has published three journal papers. In September 2018, he made a presentation at the 7th International Meeting on Origami in Science, Mathematics and Education (7OSME) in the United Kingdom.
