New Publication: Theoretical characterization of a non-rigid-foldable square-twist origami for property programmability
From: Date: 2020-12-22 Origami, the art of folding papers, offers a theoretical design method of complex 3D structures. It has been generally used in the design of metamaterials and other engineering fields. A traditional origami pattern is called the square-twist pattern, which has a twist in its 3D configuration presented first in 1988. The various assignments of mountain and valley creases in this pattern offer different rigid-foldabilities and mechanical properties to the unit structure. However, there is no theoretical model for non-rigid-foldable origami units, which limits the application of this origami pattern.
Four types of square-twist origami unit: (A) Type 1; (B) Type 2; (C) Type 3; (D) Type 4 To study the mechanical properties of non-rigid-foldable origami structures, Prof. Yan Chen’s Group in Tianjin University proposed a uniaxial tensile experiment on the square-twist type 2 unit in the figure above. The result shows that a theoretical model of type 2 unit can be established by replacing the bending of square facet with the rotation of the virtual crease.
The modified type 2 unit with a virtual crease on the square facet Then, the theoretical model for predicting mechanical properties of the non-rigid type 2 unit can be built by combining the virtual crease model with the calculation of crease rotating energy. This model has been validated by experiments and used in the analysis of tunable geometric parameters, which offers the possibility for programmable mechanical properties of non-rigid square-twist units.
