Origami artist Haozheng Pei visited MSL

From:                                                 Date: 2023-04-03

On March 30, 2023, at the invitation of Prof. Chen Yan, Mr. Haozheng Pei, an origami artist, visited MSL and gave a lively and interesting lecture, “The Mark of Origami,” for all the teachers and students in the lab.
First, Mr. Pei briefly introduced the basic and standard patterns of art origami and then interacted with the present teachers and students through a question: “Find out the three-dimensional artwork corresponding to the given two-dimensional origami pattern,” which aroused the great interest of everyone.

Then, Mr. Pei selected two standard patterns to give a detailed explanation, accompanied by an animation demonstration, vividly showing the motion process from two-dimensional patterns to three-dimensional structures. Then, Mr. Pei uses several of his famous artworks to illustrate the design process of complex origami artworks.

In the end, Mr. Pei shared his understanding of origami art and the humanistic value contained in some of his artworks. For example, “Deer with 100 Flowers” (certified by Guinness World Records) expresses the young people’s expectations for a bright future, and “Zijin Grass” (permanently collected by the Memorial Hall of the Victims in Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders) embodies people’s longing for peace and life. During the question-and-answer session, Mr. Pei shared the design ideas for complex three-dimensional origami as well as tips for getting started and improving in art origami.

Mr. Pei is the international origami Olympic world champion, the winner of six gold medals, the holder of the highest record, and the holder of two Guinness World Records. He has been a judge or guest on the programs “Supper Brain”, “Voice”, “Forward to the Future,” and so on. His artworks have been awarded various awards such as “China Outstanding Cultural, Social and Educational Case”, and have been collected by many museums, including the Guinness World Records Museum.
