From: Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society Date: 2023-10-19 The 2023 International Symposium on Structures and Materials Inspired by Origami (SAMIO 2023) was successfully held in Shaoxing, Zhejiang, China. The symposium was organized by the Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society, hosted by the International Institute for Innovative Design and Intelligent Manufacturing of Tianjin University, and co-organized by Tianjin University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and Wuhan University. This symposium brought together approximately 300 experts, researchers, origami artists, and enthusiasts from around the world to explore and exchange the latest innovative research achievements in the field of origami.
At the invitation of Professor Yan Chen, the Conference Chair, distinguished guests including Professor Zhong You from University of Oxford, Professor Guoxing Lu from Swinburne University of Technology, Japanese origami artist Tomoko Fuse, Professor Jinsong Leng from Harbin Institute of Technology, Professor Jun Mitani from Tsukuba University, Professor Kyujin Cho from Seoul National University, Professor Yuesheng Wang from Tianjin University, Professor Changqing Chen from Tsinghua University, Professor Jinkyu Yang from Seoul National University, and Professor Hanqing Jiang from Westlake University attended the symposium and delivered keynote speeches. During the symposium presentations, attendees engaged in lively discussions, sharing their insights, experiences, and research achievements. They explored the latest developments and challenges in the field, establishing new connections and expanding their academic and professional networks in the exchange of ideas.
The symposium featured five parallel sessions with different themes, covering a wide range of topics, including Origami Art and Mathematics, Design for Morphing or Deployable Structures, Mechanics of Origami Structures and Materials, Metamaterials, and Origami Robotics. A total of 14 invited experts and scholars delivered invited talks during the symposium. In addition, the symposium selected 66 submissions for oral presentations, and 42 submissions were displayed as posters.
In addition to the captivating keynote and parallel sessions, the symposium also organized origami workshop. Under the guidance of Dr. Wenwu Chang, attendees had the opportunity to engage in hands-on folding activities, creating origami artworks such as the golden ratio point and origami polyhedron. This allowed them to deeply appreciate the significance of origami design.
A total of 10 Excellent Presentation Awards and 5 Excellent Poster Awards were selected during this symposium. Professor Guoxing Lu, the Chair of the Award Committee, presented the awards to the winners at the closing ceremony. Finally, Professor Yan Chen delivered the closing speech, expressing heartfelt gratitude to all the attendees and staff, and officially declared the successful conclusion of the SAMIO 2023 international symposium.
