Congratulations to Weiqi Liu who succesfully defended the doctoral dissertation in Tianjin University on May 17, 2024.

       Weiqi Liu has been studied on Structural Design and Property Tunability of Reconfigurable Origami Metamaterials in Motion Structure Laboratory since September 2019. First, he developed a straightforward algorithm that combines motion compatibility conditions and graphic representation to obtain all rigid mountain-valley creases in origami structures with 4-crease vertices and their tessellations. Secondly, he proposed vertically transferable joints for the design of thick-panel structures, thus enabling a single mechanical metamaterial to combine programmable properties of Poisson's ratio, deployable ratio, and variable stiffness. Thirdly, he designed modular origami unit based on a single closed-loop spatial seven-revolute linkage, and a back-to-back assembly of the modules and their tessellations to realise tunability in all crystallographic planar symmetry groups under variable stiffness materials or pneumatic actuation. Finally, he developed 3D programmable metamaterials based on reconfigurable mechanism modules whose Poisson’s ratios can be programmed independently in orthogonal planes within a wide range from -∞ to +∞. During his Ph.D., he published a total of 4 journal papers as the first author in Adv. Funct. Mater., Int. J. Mech. Sci., Mech. Mach. Theory, and J. Mech. Robot., and presented 2 conference papers at the IFToMM CCMMS. In addition, he was awarded the National Scholarship for Doctoral Students 2022, the Three Goods Students and the Excellent Student Leaders of Tianjin University.
